From University Park, travel from the ridgeline overlooking the West Fork of the Deep River along one of High Point’s prized new boardwalk greenways to take in the riparian ecosystem. Travelling from among treetops to near-ground-level views, the Deep River features a host of bottomland residents including the pileated woodpecker, Carolina wren, and even a family of beavers at work! Insightful infographics dot the pristine and winding boardwalk as the hike progresses to ground level.

          The 2.8-mile out-and-back hike will take the group to the Piedmont Environmental Center and its busy bird feeders as the turnaround point. 3 hours, 15 minutes will be allotted for it so that we may return by sunset, when University Park closes and when the beavers will hopefully be out, with the birds, too. Beavers, most active at dusk, will hopefully be seen at this point of return.
