About:    Join us for a walking tour and conversation about the ecology of an urban neighborhood and how our decisions regarding landscaping, turf, mosquito control, leaf and debris removal (or not!) affect everything from water, soil, and air quality to the food web of our entire local ecology.

Local resident and Triad Wild! board member, Robin Davis, is a passionate environmentalist who is working to align her neighbors, as well as the city Parks and Recreation team responsible for the management of Sunset Hills’ two parks, with a more nature-based approach to our pre-conceived notion of what a healthy landscape “should” look like.

Robin is quick to point out that this is all a relatively new shift in thinking for her, too; not all that long ago her yard was literally filled with invasive plants that were of no ecological benefit to wildlife.  Her mind was totally opened and challenged by the ideas presented by Dr. Doug Tallamy in one of his first books, “Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants.”  And so, the journey began.

This will be a combination of conversation about these topics and a walking tour of some of the gardens in the park and neighborhood to evaluate different approaches to landscaping and how those impact our environment.

Recommended reading before or after the evening:

Any of Dr. Doug Tallamy’s 4 books!

There are also many recorded videos online of talks that he has given across the country on this topic. You can find some of his videos and more information about his books here.

The event is free and open to everyone but limited to 25 registrants. Register here to reserve your spot and let us know you will be joining us.

In case of rain, we will have an indoor program, My Discovery of Native Plants, with Robin Davis at Get Outdoors Pedal and Paddle located at 1515 W Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27403 at 7PM

What we love, we can and should nurture and protect. ~Robin
