On Saturday, October 24 from 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM, Triad Wild! will be joining fellow nature-lovers from T. Gilbert Pearson Audubon and Tri-County Conservationists for a monadnock adventure at Alamance County’s Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area – Oak Hill Trailhead.
The hike will be timed at peak fall colors and be 2.5 miles long on Lookout Trail. The focus is on getting to the tower at the summit and ascending through the autumn canopy to get a panoramic view of fall colors, plus downtown Greensboro in the distance! Fall bird migration will still be ongoing but winding down, so we will possibly see migratory birds along the way.
Address:
Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area – OakHill Trailhead
5545 Bass Mountain Rd, Snow Camp, NC 27349
Hike:
Ascending and descending a monadnock mountain trail, but at what the Alamance Parks website describes as “built with families and “non-hikers” in mind featuring wide terrain and relatively gentle elevation gains”. There is an optional ascent and descent of a tower at the top, which is the highest elevation east of Greensboro in North Carolina. The surroundings are entirely woodland.
Restrooms are accessible in the parking lot.
To bring: water/drinks, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing, binoculars, flashlight/headlamp as we will be finishing up right around sunset.
Coordinator and Contact information: Board member Patrick DePinto depinto.patrick@gmail.com
The hike will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
Registration is appreciated so we know how many to expect. Register here.
